LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF ASKS YOU TO WALK FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY CONFLICT IN NORTHERN UGANDA
| Previous Alerts |
ACTION ALERT 9/26/2007
The two decade conflict in northern Uganda displaced an estimated 1.3 million people and forced over 25,000 children to become soldiers or brides. The people, and particularly the children, of northern Uganda have waited years for peace in the region.
Today, there is new hope with peace talks between the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) taking in place in Juba, Sudan. This historic moment is an opportunity to show your concern for the people affected by this crisis. By voicing your opinion U.S. policymakers will see the importance of peace in the region. Peace is possible!
Lutheran World Relief began working in Uganda in 1983 in response to a regional food crisis. Today, Lutheran World Relief’s focus in Uganda has expanded to include work with those displaced by conflict in northern Uganda and those affected by HIV/AIDS.
Take Action
We at Lutheran World Relief encourage you to participate in the third annual GuluWalk, on Saturday, October 20, 2007. The Walk will be held in various cities around the country and world to raise awareness of the conflict in northern Uganda.
Last year over 15,000 advocates from 45 U.S. cities participated in GuluWalk. Globally, 30,000 people in 82 cities walked to raise awareness about the crisis. This year GuluWalk has the opportunity to surpass expectations and make a larger impact.
This Walk, which began in 2005, is named after the Gulu district in northern Uganda. The Walk represents a time when up to 40,000 children would commute to and sleep in neighboring towns to avoid being abducted by the LRA. Many times children would be forced to sleep in streets and storefront porches with little or no food. Today, with relative peace in the area, this practice is has greatly reduced. However, the people of the region still have tremendous needs, particularly the children in northern Uganda.
The format of the Walk will vary from city to city, so please visit www.guluwalk.org for further details. To sign-up for a Walk near your community please click here.
