KENYA CRISIS
Emergency Alert - Updated January 16, 2008

Background:
Violence in Kenya following a disputed election has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people, with as many as 250,000 fleeing their homes. Churches, homes and shops have been looted and burned by protesters, including a Lutheran church outside Nairobi. Thousands of displaced people are taking shelter in schools and churches, and the crisis will likely create a food shortage, as many people left behind unharvested crops when they fled.
| LWR AND PARTNERS ARE HELPING |
Lutheran World Relief (LWR) is working with its partners the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya and the Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church to provide emergency food aid, tents and blankets to 4,000 displaced families in Mombasa and in the Nyanza Province.
We are coordinating with other members of the global aid alliance Action by Churches Together (ACT) International to ensure equitable distribution of aid, and LWR and our partners continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds.
The best way to assist people caught in an emergency is to give cash so that our partner staff on the ground can be most effective.
