INDIA/BIHAR FLOODS
Emergency Alert Updated - November 20, 2008

You can help
our local partners
provide needed assistance.

Background:

Lutheran World Relief (LWR) is responding to severe flooding in Northern India. Monsoon rains have caused the River Kosi to change its normal course, resulting in the worst flooding in the region’s recorded history and inundating many areas that are not usually prone to flooding.

Bihar—the hardest hit region—reports that 2.4 million people in 13 districts have been displaced without secure access to basic necessities such as clean water. The government now faces the daunting task of moving millions of people to protected zones.

Flood waters have also destroyed crops and killed livestock undermining food security in the region and destroying agricultural livelihoods.

LWR AND PARTNERS ARE HELPING
ACT Logo

LWR is working with the Action by Churches Together (ACT) international alliance and local partners Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action and Lutheran World Service-India (LWSI) to provide immediate relief assistance, including:

  • Emergency food aid;
  • Access to safe drinking water;
  • Temporary shelter materials for families whose homes have been lost or damaged;
  • Emergency kits containing health and hygiene items.

LWR is also working with the Institute for Development Education and Action (IDEA) to distribute food to affected families in the Madhupura district.
