Background:
An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit the heavily populated area of Yogyakarta, Indonesia early in the morning of May 27, 2006, killing over 5,700 people and injuring more than 38,000.
Many buildings in the city of 3 million were destroyed, and as many as 1.5 million people may have been left homeless by the disaster (AlertNet, UMCOR).

Lutheran World Relief (LWR) is working with its partners in Action by Churches Together (ACT), a global consortium of churches and faith-based aid agencies, to assist survivors.
Response to this crisis includes:
- Distribution of food and non-food relief items
- Trauma counseling
- Disaster preparedness training
- Support of hospitals with medicines and supplies
- Basic medical training for rural populations
- Water and sanitation projects to prevent the spread of disease
- Livelihood and housing reconstruction support.
The best way to assist people caught in an emergency is to give cash so that our partner staff on the ground can be most effective. Your gift will be used for the “Indonesia Earthquake” until needs there are met. After that, further gifts will be used to help LWR respond where the need is greatest.
