DROUGHT IN EAST AFRICA
Emergency Alert - Updated 3/07

You can help
our local partners
provide needed assistance.

Background:

In 2006-7, LWR responded to a severe drought in Kenya by implementing a response on behalf of its partners in Action by Churches Together (ACT) International. Through ACT, drought resistant seeds and agricultural tools were distributed to 2000 households, three communities built sub-surface dams, and 815 individuals learned soil and water conservation methods. Now, when it does rain, these communities are able to retain water for use in seasons of drought. The new tools and seeds have led to earlier and more abundant harvests, with more food to sell and store for future use.

Despite recent floods in the south, inadequate rainfall is again expected for 2007 in many parts of the country. In the midst of these challenges, LWR is continuing to work with several partner organizations in Kenya to address current needs and to better prepare for future emergencies.

  • Working with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya to increase support to those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS
  • Providing materials to construct latrines
  • Promoting hygiene and sanitation education
