With the arrival of spring comes renewal and the promise of the future. In each of this month’s stories, we are reminded of promises of the future: one in which Haiti is recovering, malaria is no longer a threat and clean water is abundant throughout the world.
If you have a story about how you put your faith into action with LWR, please contact us. We love to hear your stories!
These days $10 doesn’t buy much. But when you take that same amount and purchase an insecticide-treated bed net, you get something priceless—the chance to protect a life from the devastating effects of malaria. As World Malaria Day approaches on April 25, you can take action by providing bed nets that prevent malaria infections. Your $10 donation not only buys a net, it also helps distribute the nets to the people who need them most and educates families about how to protect themselves from infection.
Large congregations and small ones, youth groups, families, individuals—so many people joined together in the days, weeks and months following the earthquake to help the people of Haiti. In just three short months, your collective efforts—both large and small—have helped LWR raise more than $6 million for vital relief and development programs in Haiti.
High in the mountains of Bolivia sits the indigenous community of Ulca Alta, where, at altitudes between 3,500 and 4,500 meters above sea level, oxygen isn’t the only resource that’s hard to come by. Before Lutheran World Relief started working in Ulca Alta and the surrounding communities, their remote location made access to water very difficult. Now they have a water treatment system, and the health of the children and families has improved.
The bloody, 60-year conflict in Colombia has touched every village, every church and every family in the war-torn country. It has created the worst humanitarian crisis in the western hemisphere, yet few in the U.S. know about it. Make sure you do.
Visit LWR’s free, interactive exhibit that brings to life this decades-long conflict that has displaced four million people and claimed the lives of countless human rights leaders.
This traveling exhibit is currently on display at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. To learn more and to check out the full schedule, visit remember.lwr.org.
Did you know that 1.2 billion people lack access to clean and affordable water? And water-borne diseases kill 5 million people each year. But YOU can help provide water to those in need throughout the world.
A gift as little as $35 will provide an emergency water filter to those in disaster situations. $150 gives gravity-fed water filter that supplies a convenient source of clean water to families. And $500 provides a sustainable and life-giving community water system. Help LWR Fill the Well today.
Help LWR Fill the Well and provide plentiful water to the world’s poorest people. Please gift a gift today or learn more at lwr.org.water.
Malaria kills one child every 30 seconds in Africa. Fight back! In honor of World Malaria Day on April 25th, provide a bed net to someone at risk. Just $10 buys an insecticide-treated bed net, delivers it to someone in Africa and educates them on it’s use. It’s that easy, and it’s something you can do right now. Buy a net now or go to lwr.org/malaria to learn more.
Affirming God’s love for all people, we work with Lutherans and partners around the world to end poverty, injustice and human suffering.
