PEACE SANCTUARY CHURCHES TO VISIT U.S., Bringing
“Salt and Light” to the
Debate Over Colombia Policy
In March 2006 Pastors Estér González, Jasper Rodríguez and Isaí Prasca – leaders of three of Colombia’s Peace Sanctuary Churches – visited the United States to share what they have learned from their churches’ experience of building peace amidst conflict. One of the ways they shared their perspective with people of faith here in the U.S. was through “Colombia parties,” gatherings where people shared Colombian food, music and history and asked questions of the three pastors through a telephone conference.
The materials on this page were provided to hosts of these parties. You may find them useful for other Colombia events in your church or community.

Nation-Wide Colombia Parties!
With SO MANY reasons to celebrate . . . . . .
In late March, three leaders from the amazing Peace Sanctuary Churches of Colombia will visit the U.S. to share their stories of faith, hope and peace. They will offer concrete proposals for how U.S. policy toward their country can be better, and how we can help.
This U.S. public presentation is the culmination of an intensive process of reflection and documentation by the Peace Sanctuary Churches in Colombia, who have partnered with U.S. Midwest communities — known as Sal y Luz ("Salt and Light") communities — in this process.
. . . . . we decided to THROW A PARTY!
And we need your help:
HOST A PARTY IN YOUR HOME OR CHURCH
On the evening of Thursday, March 23 we invite you to host a Colombia party in your church or home, as part of a nationwide fiesta to:
- Sample some fine Colombian food and music
- Learn about the hope-giving work of the
Peace Sanctuary Churches
- Talk with the Peace Sanctuary Church leaders and LWR President Kathryn Wolford, through a telephone conference that will allow them be to present at all the house and church parties at once to answer your questions
If there are a few people interested in Colombia in your congregation or community, don’t get together for one party but have each person host a separate party with friends who aren't already involved in advocating for peace in Colombia!
All you will need to host a party is a speaker phone and a DVD player and TV. If you don’t have these, ask around among your friends to borrow them.
Let Marisa Mancini know that you’re interested in hosting a party with an e-mail (mmancini@gustavus.edu) or phone call (507-933-7953). She will send you an information packet, including Colombian recipes and music recommendations, instructions for participating in the call-in, a DVD introducing the Peace Sanctuary Church leaders and LWR’s President, an advisory to send out to your local media about the parties, and other suggestions.
