DAYS OF PRAYER AND ACTION FOR COLOMBIA
MAY 20 & 21, 2007

Dear friends of Colombia,

It’s time for the Days of Prayer and Action once again!  Join congregations across the U.S. and Canada on Sunday May 20th to remember and pray for our brothers and sisters in Colombia in your services.  Then on May 21st it’s time to go to our lawmakers with concrete requests.

Even after 50 years of internal violence, Colombian religious and community leaders continue to work courageously for peace.  They persevere in the face of great personal danger. Churches, individuals, student groups and others: please join LWR and the broader Christian community as we support these inspiring individuals and communities!

MAY 20: PRAYING FOR PEACE

You may find these helpful for your service or vigil: background information, resources for the Day of Prayer (sample sermons, liturgies, prayers, biblical text, etc.), a sample bulletin insert, and a postcard to Congress which can be printed and included in bulletins for easy participation in Monday’s Day of Action.  Other materials are available at peaceincolombia.org.

MAY 21: CALLING ON OUR LAWMAKERS

To find your Representative and Senators and their contact information, visit www.house.gov and www.senate.gov or call the capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121We encourage you to call your representative and both of your senators!

ASK OUR LAWMAKERS TO:

  • Dramatically reduce military funding for Colombia
  • Make efforts to end aerial fumigations
  • Increase humanitarian aid to Colombian civilians
  • Ensure the safety of Colombian peace sanctuary communities

Visit these links for other Resources for the Day of Action, including lobby resources, sample letters to the editor, film screening tips, discussion questions, and how to plan a vigil.  You may also want to use the General Days of Prayer and Action Flier and March Educational Event flier.

Please let us know if you and your church plan to participate.  Along with a number of partner organizations, we’re working toward a goal of 500 participating churches!

THANK YOU!  If we do not raise our voices, Congress will never know that we care.  Thank you for doing your part to alter U.S. policy toward Colombia for the sake of her people!

We hope that you will let friends and family know about this action!
