Because Tanzanian coffee farms are very small—average sizes range from ½ to 2 acres, it is important for farmers to use their land wisely. Coffee trees are planted among banana trees, beans and corn. The shade from the banana trees improves the quality of the coffee and the intercropping also enriches the soil.
