Coffee farmers rely on income from their coffee harvest to pay school fees for their children. The Umburi Lutheran Secondary School, built in the midst of coffee and banana trees, has seen a steady decline in student enrollment due to falling coffee prices. With a capacity of 320 students, the school currently has only 84 students. “Education is disrupted by lack of funds,” says headmaster Israel Joseph Makia. “Students pay a little, learn a little and then go home to get more money.” Economic hardship also prevents the building of boarding facilities for the students. These students live in a boarding house near the school that is rented from a local villager.
