Coffee farming was first introduced to Tanzanians in 1898. The first coffee trees, planted on the Kilema Roman Catholic Mission still produce coffee today. In 1919, the Chagga, the dominant tribe living on Mount Kilimanjaro, began planting coffee as a cash crop.
