FAIR TRADE COFFEE PROJECT

Coordinating the LWR Coffee Project in your congregation is a fun and rewarding experience! It’s a great way to build fellowship among members and improve the lives of coffee farmers around the world.

  1. SET YOUR GOALS
  • Serve Fair Trade coffee at fellowship hour and other church events.
  • Sell Fair Trade for home and office use.
  • Use Fair Trade as a basis for further study and understanding about economic and social justice issues.
  • Give baskets of Fair Trade products to welcome new members, show appreciation to faithful volunteers, and as Christmas gifts.
  • Sell Fair Trade coffee as a fundraiser.
  • Create your own goal.
  1. GETTING STARTED
  • Get seed money to make the first coffee order–ask the Church Council, or women’s or men’s group to donate.
  • Recruit people to help coordinate the project.
  • Establish a system for keeping records. Ask the church bookkeeper or accountant for guidance.
  1. ORDER

Call 774-776-7340 or visit lwrcoffee.com to place your order. LWR Coffee Project customer service representatives can give you expert advice on what coffees are most popular among Lutherans, how much to order and instructions for brewing.

  1. EDUCATE

Provide educational resources for people to learn about Fair Trade. Click here for a list of available resources, or call LWR at 1-800-LWR-LWR-2. Start educating your congregation about Fair Trade before you begin serving and selling coffee to build interest and anticipation.

  1. DETERMINE YOUR COST

Determining how much to charge for your coffee is up to you. You can sell it at cost, rounding to the nearest quarter or dollar, or include a markup as a way to raise money. This quality coffee retails for $10-12 per bag, so use your best judgment.

  1. SET UP YOUR DISPLAY

Create an attractive display for the coffee sales and serving area. LWR offers attractive table tents, posters, brochures and hand-outs. Be creative! Think about using Latin American and African fabrics and handcrafts to add color and interest. Consider using items from the LWR Handcraft Project.

  1. KEEP IT GOING

Develop an order form for members who’d like to order coffee for gifts or home and office use. Ask them to pay in advance so that you have the funds available to pay at the time of ordering.

Serve Fair Trade coffee every Sunday, have a sales table at regular intervals during the month, and take special orders. Expand your product line to include more flavors, and consider adding Divine Chocolate from the LWR Chocolate Project.
