INDIA:
RURAL HEALTH CARE - JAMKHED

Context

The majority of poor people in rural India continue to live without access to meaningful health care. Health indicators in these areas are appalling. Health workers trained at the Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CHRP) in Jamkhed leave with fresh enthusiasm and understanding of the principles of community-based primary health care. However, they too often return to programs where they become a voice in the wilderness. To enable health institutions effectively to implement programs that empower poor communities to address their health needs requires exposure and training for the institution's leaders and a sufficient number of trained health workers.

Project Purpose:

To improve health in poor communities served by participating organizations by providing on-site training in community-based primary health care for community-level workers, professional health care providers and church and health care organizations' leadership in the areas requesting assistance.

LWR's Partner in India:

CHRP mobilizes village women and people on the margins of rural society to provide primary and preventive health care. Diseases are treated but so are the underlying causes of ill health in a community. The program was founded in 1970 by Dr. Rajanikant Arole and (the late) Dr. Mabelle Arole. LWR began assisting the Arole's work in 1977.

Objectives:

  • Select and prepare training team consisting of a leader from CRHP staff, experienced resource persons, village health workers and representative from effective women’s and men's groups in poor communities.

  • Identify institutions or programs interested in the training and assessments the team can offer.

  • Carry out training courses and assessment visits to institutions or programs engaging the mobile team.
