JERUSALEM:
HEALTH CARE
AND TRAINING
Context
LWR has supported projects to assist the Palestinians since 1947. Today, peace remains the Palestinians’ greatest need. In this context, there are also continuing needs for preventative and curative health care. A nearly complete lack of other health services in rural villages continues to call for support to the village health clinics. High unemployment emphasizes the need for technical education that enables graduates to work in the West Bank region. Click here to read the current LWR Middle East Crisis Fact Sheet.
Project Goal:
To provide education, vocational training, and medical services to needy families in Jerusalem and the West Bank; the majority of these people are Palestinian refugees.
LWR's Partner in Jerusalem:
LWR currently supports projects administered by the Lutheran World Federation/Division of World Service.
Objectives:
With assistance from LWR, Lutheran World Federation/ Department for World Service (LWF/WS) provides:
- primary health services, preventative and curative medicine to 25 villages, servicing a population of 40,000. The rate of utilization of these services by Palestinian refugees continues to range between 70 and 80%.
- service in pediatrics, gynecology/obstetrics, internal medicine, and surgery at the Jerusalem-based Augusta Victoria Memorial Hospital.
- training, through the Secondary Vocational School, in the area of technical drawing, for 140 Palestinian young men from over 50 villages/towns. LWF/WS is also establishing a telecommunications department for women and will provide scholarships for 40-50 students.
